The COVID-19 Delta variant, first identified in India in late 2020, spreads significantly more easily than earlier strains of the virus. It quickly became dominant in many countries due to its higher transmissibility. While vaccines remain highly effective, particularly after two doses, protection against infection may be slightly reduced compared with earlier variants. Vaccination and sensible public health measures continue to play an important role in limiting its spread.
