Shake Up Your Bone Health: Can Vibration Therapy Help Strengthen your Skeleton?

If you’ve ever spotted a vibrating platform in a gym or physiotherapy clinic and wondered whether it could do more than tone your muscles, you’re not alone. Vibration therapy is gaining attention as a potential way to support bone health – but how much of it is backed by science?

What is vibration therapy?

Vibration therapy involves standing, sitting or lying on a platform that sends gentle mechanical vibrations through your body. These vibrations cause your muscles to contract and relax rapidly, similar to what happens during exercise.
When muscles pull on bones, it creates a stimulus that helps maintain bone strength. Vibration therapy aims to mimic this process, offering a low-impact alternative or complement to traditional exercise.
You won’t typically find vibration therapy on the NHS, but machines are becoming widely available in gyms, physiotherapy settings and even home use.

There are two main forms of vibration therapy available in the UK:

Whole body vibration (WBV)

This involves standing on a large platform that moves your entire body. The vibrations are more noticeable and can usually be adjusted in intensity. These machines often come with a handrail for stability and are commonly found in gyms or rehabilitation settings.

Low intensity vibration (LIV)

These machines are smaller, often no bigger than a set of bathroom scales, and deliver tiny, rapid vibrations (around 30 times per second). The sensation is much subtler, with vibrations travelling from your feet up through your legs and into the hips and spine.

Can vibration therapy actually strengthen bones?

This is the big question and the answer is still unclear.
Interestingly, vibration therapy was originally developed to help astronauts who lose bone and muscle strength in space. Early findings showed that standing on vibrating plates for short daily sessions helped reduce bone loss but translating that into everyday healthcare is more complex.

Kirsty Carne, Specialist Osteoporosis Nurse at the Royal Osteoporosis Society says:

“Some studies suggest that vibration therapy, particularly whole body vibration, may improve bone density but other research has found no meaningful benefit. Overall, there isn’t enough high-quality evidence to confirm that vibration therapy can strengthen bones or reduce the risk of fractures, especially in people who already have osteoporosis.
However, while its impact on bone strength remains uncertain, vibration therapy does show promise in another key area – reducing the risk of falls.

Whole body vibration has been found to improve muscle strength and balance. This matters because falls are one of the leading causes of broken bones in people with osteoporosis. So even if bone strength isn’t directly improved, better balance and coordination could still play a protective role. However, whole body vibration may not be suitable for people with very fragile bones or fractures.”

What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens bones, making them more likely to break, even after a minor bump or fall. These breaks, often called fragility fractures, most commonly affect the wrists, hips, and spine. While osteoporosis itself doesn’t usually cause pain, broken bones can be life-changing, leading to pain reduced mobility and, in the case of spinal fractures, height loss and a curved spine – that’s why finding ways to keep our bones strong is so important.

There are other types of exercise you can do to help maintain strong bones – a healthy lifestyle is important and includes:

  • A well-balanced, varied and calcium-rich diet
  • Safe exposure to sunlight, so that your skin makes vitamin D
  • Regular impact and strength exercise
  • Not smoking
  • Not drinking more than the recommended levels of alcohol
  • Taking steps to lower your risk of falling, as falls can lead to broken bones

Not all vibrating devices are created equal. Slimming belts or vibration bands designed for weight loss are not the same as medically studied vibration therapy platforms.
